History of Hexton Manor Estate

Hexton Manor Estate is situated just 40 miles from London, at the north eastern tip of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hexton and its surroundings are steeped in history, with the land cultivated for over 5,000 years.

Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the estate passed through seventeen different families. Work began on the present manor in 1767, with further improvements made through the 19th and 20th centuries by successive owners, including the Ashley Cooper family who owned Hexton Manor for three generations from 1935. The present owners acquired the estate in 2018.

Much of the woodland at Hexton was planted in the early 20th century and includes areas of ancient woodland. A woodland management plan is central to improving habitat for game and farmland birds, while large areas of grassland and former arable land have been put into stewardship schemes for pollinators and ground-nesting birds.

A breeding bird survey established that Hexton Manor Estate is home to at least 61 bird species, of which 20 are red or amber listed, alongside wildflower-rich chalk grassland supporting scarce butterflies.
